Local politics has a direct impact on our lives in Heidelberg. The city is responsible for around 80 percent of all matters that citizens usually associate with the “state”. Examples include street cleaning, swimming pools, garbage collection, schools and issuing a new identity card. The theater is also a municipal institution and is financed by the city of Heidelberg.

At the municipal elections on 26 May in Heidelberg, everyone who is at least 16 years old has 48 (!) votes. These can either be submitted in full for one list or distributed among the candidates on the list(s). Candidates can get up to three votes each from one voter — until the 48 votes are “used up”.

Eligible to vote are Germans and citizens of EU member states who have their primary residence in Heidelberg.

At the last local elections in 2014, only half of those eligible voted in Heidelberg. We want to change that! Voters will receive their ballot papers by post a few weeks before the elections.
